Ways to be an Urban Surf-er! (Part 2: Kiteboarding)

Posted on October 21 2019

Ever dream of soaring through the air, flying above those whose feet are seemingly glued to the ground? Well many of us here at Urban Surf and all around the world do quite often, however, we call it Kiteboarding.

Before take-off, lets breeze through just a bit of history. For centuries, humans have been creating new and improved ways to harness energy from elements that surround us and use them for our entertainment/benefit. Derived from sailing and various board-riding activities, the pioneers of kiting created a sport that takes something invisible to the human eye (wind) and turns it into a worldwide spectacle.

After following kite prototype's throughout the 70's and 80's, it wasn't till the late 1990's that Kiteboarding took off as a semi-global sport and new eye-catching way for thrill seekers and water(wo)men alike to toss themselves around water, land, snow, and up in the air. Take snowboarding, surfing, sailing, paragliding, windsurfing, wakeboarding, and skateboarding and throw it all together to see what happens:

Amazing right? Don't go yet, cause it only gets better. Although social media and youtube are filled with professionals that we know...make it look easy... it IS a sport that ANYONE can learn.

"I've seen it all. Moms & dads, over 60 year olds, paraplegics, kids, business (wo)men, just some of your average joe's and jane's you'd never guess have learned to kite and can now RIP!" - Jeffro (instructor) of Urban Surf Kiteboarding

There are tons of excellent kiteboarding schools around the globe for you to take your first step. Take a tropical vacation this winter to Hawaii, Mexico, Central/South America, or other tropical islands and you'll find schools to get you up and riding! If you're looking for something closer to home, Urban Surf Kiteboarding teaches intro to advanced lessons at Jetty Island in Everett during the summer months and has been doing so for almost 20 years! Taking a ground course lesson with them is the perfect way to learn the basics of kite flying and find out if Kiteboarding is right for you (ground course lessons are offered year round!).

If you're looking for a tropical destination to learn, Urban Surf Kiteboarding also has an incredible partnership with Palapas Ventana down in La Ventana (Baja Mexico) from November to March! An amazing opportunity to learn from the same amazing instructors up in Everett during the summertime, this is the best way to escape a cold Seattle winter and relax, snorkel, dive, lounge, sight see, AND learn kiteboarding all at the same place and for an affordable price!
