Coming home from Christmas break in California. Henrik had been in Hawaii. Cole, well adjusted to the wind and ready to paddle. And a new initiate to surfing’s core, hockey and wind enthusiast, Zach had expressed interest in surfing with us. We rocked up to Westport to find perfect offshore conditions, barrels right and left. Massive swell, however.
Knowing that these conditions were not suitable for Zach and yet so desiring immersion into the chaos of the “Corner”, we perked up at Zach’s unlikely suggestion of a secret spot down the coast. His Friend Charlie knew of a mini right hand wedge created by a man-made land mass just down the coast.
Apparently this spot is called Washaways, and I think I know why… around the front end of this “jetty”, which is really a relatively small outcropping of rock and gravel, rips a nasty current. At one point in the session the current sucked me fully around, much to the chagrin of my comrades.
These waves are good, but the swell was noticeably minimized compared to the beach break north. I would suggest checking Washaways out if you find Westport oversized. Once when this happened to me I drove to Damon Point. Unfortunately, Damon Point has since been compromised by king tides and swell… and is considerably further away from Westport than Washaways.
