The most common mistake we see in the shop isn’t buying the wrong brand. It’s buying the wrong volume. Someone finds a deal on a 65L board, figures they’ll grow into it, and spends their first ten sessions frustrated wondering why they can’t get up. Getting the volume right from the start changes everything. Here’s our two cents.

Where to Start
1. Rider Weight
Board volume in wing foiling is measured in liters, and the simplest starting point is your body weight in kilograms. Everything builds from there.
If you weigh 80kg and you’re brand new to wing foiling, you want somewhere in the range of 120-140L. That’s your weight plus 40-60 liters of buffer. It sounds like a lot, but that extra float is what lets you stand up, sort out your wing control, and find your balance before the foil does any of the work.
As you progress to intermediate level you can come down to roughly your weight plus 20-30L.

2. Board Width
Volume gets most of the attention but width is what you actually feel underfoot during water starts. A wider board gives you a bigger platform to stand on before the foil lifts you out of the water. That stability during the launch phase is where a lot of beginners struggle, and a wide board buys you more time to sort it out.
Most dedicated beginner wing boards are 28-32 inches wide. As you move into intermediate territory you’ll start to see 24-26 inch boards, which are faster to get on foil but demand more from your balance.
3. Don’t Overthink It
The most common follow-up question we get after sizing someone into a bigger board is some version of: “But will I outgrow it?”
Yes, eventually. Most riders who start on a 140L are ready to step down within one to two seasons. That’s not a long time and it’s not a problem.
Here’s why: boards hold their value well, especially if you buy quality. When you’re ready to move down in volume, you can sell your board, put that money toward the next one, and trade.
The board that’s too small from day one doesn’t have that same story. It just costs you sessions.
